Brecon Mountain Railway

Sightseeing attraction | Merthyr Tydfil | Wales | United Kingdom

The Brecon Mountain Railway is a historic narrow-gauge railway in South Wales, running from Pant, approximately 5 kilometers north of Merthyr Tydfil, to Torpantau. It follows a section of the former Brecon & Merthyr Railway, which was originally opened in 1859 and closed in 1964. The present-day heritage railway was built on a section of this historic route and offers a scenic 10-mile round trip through the southern part of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The journey starts at the main station in Pant, where visitors take their seats in weather-protected observation carriages pulled by a historic steam locomotive. The route runs alongside the picturesque Pontsticill Reservoir, providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape along the way. At the terminus in Torpantau, located high in the Brecon Beacons, passengers have the opportunity to explore the area before beginning the return journey.

The Brecon Mountain Railway is not only a highlight for railway enthusiasts, but also for nature lovers who want to experience the impressive beauty of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The combination of historic railway technology and untouched nature makes this attraction an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.

It was our first time visiting for the Santa Specials, and it was a really lovely Christmas activity enjoyed by all the family. The fact that there’s assigned seating on the carriages make it so much more easy to onboard, and to relax and enjoy the train ride. The team and staff behind it are incredible - they put everything into running the event, and even though there’s a queue for Santa, it’s relatively quick and you have mince pies and mulled wine (or squash and chocolate for the children) to keep you occupied as you wait. And once you’ve seen Santa, it’s nice that you have the option to get face painting or glitter tattoo’s (at additional cost), to pass the time, as you wait for everyone to board the train for the return journey home. The highlight of our trip for the whole party was the riding of the steam train itself and also getting to watch it maneuvre - not to mention the beautiful views as we rode along. Unfortunately the whole day out was massively marred by the abrupt and rude behaviour from the person directing the car park, who spoke to us in a shocking manner. We asked him where he’d like us to park and he muttered something passively aggressively about how we’d passed it now. Called my partner back, even though it was extremely windy, to re-park despite waiting for us all to park up, get out and walk nearly up to the doors. Blamed us for parking wrong because another customer had dared to follow us in a car into the car park (?!?) and was just very unpleasant to deal with. As we came for a special Birthday surprise it actually ruined the start to the day, and upset the children - because the individual was so blatantly rude and the manner in which he called my partner back. Would strongly recommend replacing this member of staff, as it was a stark contrast to everyone else working there, who clearly made a massive effort to make all visitors feel welcome. He clearly was in a foul mood, which is unfortunate for him, but absolutely no reason to take it out on customers. Would be 5 star if it wasn’t for this person, and will be one of the main reasons we aren’t keen to return again next year, despite thoroughly enjoying.

We visited this railway at the end of October as a birthday present for my son as he’s fanatic about trains, and this was well worth the visit! The train ride itself was brilliant as you can stand in the balcony of the train whilst it’s moving. The views were incredible and we loved being able to see everything from outside the carriage. Inside the station there is also the workshop which my son loved looking in to see all the work that was being done on the trains! Would recommend

An absolutely superb day out on the Santa Express. The staff at the station and grotto were amazing, all in the festive spirit. I liked the free colouring gifts for the kids to do while they waited for the train. The train ride was incredible and very well organised by the train staff. The grotto itself, although very busy, was quick and we were in to see Santa in no time. The present from Santa was also very good. I also thought the additional extras like free mince pies, chocolate and warm mulled wine were lovely touches. I'd highly recommend this trip, definitely worth the price! Well done to all involved!

My 3 year old girls loved the Santa special and especially meeting Mrs Claus and the raindeer. Despite the pouring rain! Perfect experience for young children. Different from many Santa experiences today with the train ride. Easy, simple and not overwhelming. Gizmo the magician was a nice touch. Queues went fast as only 4 little carriages of people. Lovely gifts which the children have been enjoying everyday since. Thanks for creating lovely memories. They want to come back next year!

We did a Santa Express and was thoroughly impressed with the whole experience. The staff are all in costume. Good decorations around the starting station. The Station used for Santa's grotto was very well done and their Santa was very, very good too.

An excellent trip up the mountain on a steam train. We were allowed to take our dog which was great. Beautiful scenery. The train stops a couple of times to stretch your legs and enjoy some refreshments.

Update : that’s fine but you can see the river by foot ! . The entire journey which is so short for the money people paying £22 bruh £22 per person ! I’m so mad for what the hell the journey was . I don’t care what you think because , I think you are scamming people off . All there’s so see is trees !! Going through tress . People please see videos before you decide to take this bcz it’s a waste of money . And my advice is if you gonna take so much money from people at least change your route and make sure people are getting some views !! I thought I will be seeing Mountain Views and some astonishing views covering river , mountain etc . But man it was just tress . I felt like crying there . Sorry but save your money and don’t go here . It wasn’t even worth £5 bcz literally saw nothing . £22 per person and guess what you see nothing . And I’m telling you nothing . Just trees as it goes through forest and not mountain . You don’t see a single mountain . You can see one reservoir and you can see that even with car or walk 😭. I thought it gonna go through mountains but no man . Do your research and see a video of where it goes through and the views you gonna see before you hop on one of them . Coz it’s useless . £22 !!

Although the actual experience was wonderful - it was very expensive for such a short journey and our carriage was overcrowded with a family who had personal hygiene issues. They chomped loudly on crisps and were more interested in larking around than the stunning views of mountains and reservoirs.

Fantastic, narrow gauge steam train, the views are wonderful and the train was impeccably maintained and clean with original features from a bygone era. The scenery in autumn was spectacular.

What a wonderful experience! Clean, tidy establishment, polite, respectful staff, beautifully restored/built engines and carriages and to top it all, the lovely welsh countryside. The old American built engine, well! That whistle evoked memories of old black and white movies and sent shivers through me. Thank you one and all.
